Dealing With Facebook Addiction: The Geeky Way

This is basically like the Facebook patch or maybe the Alcoholic Anonymous for Facebook.  I wanted to come up with a way where I would not be able to go on to Facebook no matter what.  But I didn't want it to be permanent!  When it comes to networking with friends, Facebook is an invaluable resource.  I don't want to delete my account.. just suspend it from myself.

How Youtube Plans On Making Money

Google bought YouTube.  That is pretty old news.  YouTube attracts millions of views every second.  But how does it help Google?  I think this article from the New York Times explains nicely how Youtube plans on making money now.

In summary, the plan is to put ads on things people view the most, which coincidently turns out to be copyrighted material.  So instead of removing copyrighted material, Google plans on monetizing  by putting ads on just that content.  The revenue from those particular ads is split between Google and the actual content producer.

Smart idea if you ask me.

Natya Dance Theatre at Jay Pritzker Pavilion

I finally had time to go to Millennium Park yesterday and to my surprise, there was a Bharatanatyam performance going on in Jay Pritzker Pavilion. Natya Dance Theatre, the group performing, is an "agent of cultural preservation" that "teaches and evaluates performance of Bharata Natyam, a classical Indian dance form". I thought a special someone might like this, and although I didn't see the entire performance, it was still quite enjoyable.

I Wish My Mood Wasn't Binary

Even a moment's reflection will show that the spoken American language is backed by expressive features lacking in the written language: the rise or fall of the voice at the ends of phrases and sentences; the application of vocal loudness to this or that word or part of a word; the use of gesture; the meaningful rasp or liquidity, shouting or muting, drawling or clipping, whining or breaking, melody or whispering imparted to the quality of the voice. ... In speech. we safeguard meaning by the use of intonation, stress, gesture, and voice qualities.

How to Study Flashcards Effectively

Even though I'm starting work in Chicago, graduate school is an option for me in the future.  And as SAT is for college, GRE is for graduate school, and I figure it's better to start studying earlier than later (although this isn't my typical study behavior).  Vocabulary being such a huge part of the GRE (just like the SAT), I wanted to start using flashcards again.

I stumbled upon Cramberry.  It was perhaps the sleekest, simplest, and most intelligent flashcard program out on the web.  The most attractive feature was that it had an "Intelligent Studying" scheduler that suggested when you should study.  I used it for about 1.5 weeks and my studying was going perfectly.

All until Cramberry decided to get rid of intelligent scheduling...

Why Take3?

I always find it fun coming up with stupid names.  I mean every name had to start somewhere, right?  This is my third attempt at keeping a daily blog.

  1. Attempt one was at blogspot.  Didn't work because it was complicated.
  2. Second try was a pretty decent with WordPress.  Actually kept it going for a month or two, before the laptop I was hosting it from crashed.  Hard drive's fine but I'm too lazy to transfer everything.
  3. So we get to Take 3...
